Although Camden Town (usually shortened to Camden) is just 2.5 miles from central London, it has its own distinctive feel and character. Camden grew in importance when the railway system was developed and it became a transport hub – the popular performance venue The Roundhouse was originally built to house locomotive engines. Although there are still signs of the area’s industrial past, particularly the former warehouses along Regent’s Canal which have been converted into apartments – Camden these days is all about retail, food and entertainment.
