We are the UK's leading specialist interior designer agency, connecting discerning clients with the best interior design talent in Notting Hill and across London.
The wide streets of Notting Hill with their tall and stucco-fronted, pillar-porched houses have become one of the most desirable residential areas in London. The combination of imposing and attractive housing stock, a vibrant and cosmopolitan community and fashionable shops and restaurants has propelled property prices into the stratosphere.
Notting Hill’s substantial houses and imposing terraces, built in the 19th century along sweeping crescents and around communal gardens, were originally intended for the upper middle classes as a more affordable option to Belgravia. As servants ceased to be employed, the houses became difficult to maintain and were split into multiple occupation, falling into disrepair under poor management by greedy landlords. The area garnered a reputation for seedy boarding houses and disreputable goings-on. During the 1960s many houses were squatted and became associated with hippy culture as seen in the film Performance starring Mick Jagger and James Fox.
Gentrification over recent decades, however, has meant that Notting Hill has shed its down-at-heel reputation and many houses have returned to single occupancy, especially those streets radiating from the southern end of Ladbroke Grove. With more garden squares than most other parts of London, and Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park nudging its south-eastern corner, Notting Hill’s leafiness is a major draw for families and young professionals looking for glamour and homeliness.
Running through Notting Hill is Portobello Road, with its world-famous market of antique and vegetable stalls that is still a good place for a bargain, and independent retailers. Numerous galleries in the area are good hunting ground when choosing art for your interior, while Westbourne Grove is the place to head for fashionable clothes and homeware and health shops, and the area in general has a many well-regarded restaurants and bars.
Notting Hill Carnival takes place every August bank holiday and is led by the Caribbean community, many of whom emigrated to Britain in the 1950s. The constant renewal of the population from other cultures gives the area a vibrant, cosmopolitan edge that its neighbours in Kensington and Chelsea lack.
Residential streets of note include Kensington Park Gardens, Ladbroke Square and Norland Square to the West and Bassett Road and Oxford Gardens ito the North. People with houses on in Landsdowne Crescent, Landsdowne Road and Elgin Crescent enjoy a private communal garden and Princedale Road and Portland Road have some very pretty cottages. In addition, one can find many excellent period conversion flats in the likes of Stanley Gardens and Pembridge Square.
