For this 250 year old thatched cottage, we needed a concept that would be modern enough to suit the young family living there, but still respected the age and beauty of the house. In the kitchen, the owners wanted all modern conveniences, including an electric Aga. We fully renovated the room, with a contemporary colour palette of white, black, dark green and grey. The lighting, ironmongery and taps provide a strong contrast to the original beamed ceiling, give an industrial feel to the space. For the sitting room, our inspiration was taken from private members' clubs with large leather wing-back. We also used the same industrial light as the kitchen to create synergy and give a twist to the very traditional inglenook fireplace. We turned the living room into a cinema room, with large TV and 5.1 AV surround-sound system, and chose a subdued colour palette for optimum viewing. And, thanks to the length of the room, we were also able to create a music or reading nook at one end.
