This project consisted of a large new basement to this family home in Chiswick. We developed the layout to accommodate - media / play room, guest bedroom, office, bathroom and utility room. This was followed by the design of all internal elements - bathroom, staircase, storage and built in furniture. And finalised with the selection of finishes, furnishing and fittings. We focused on creating the perception of light and spaciousness to eliminate the inherent ‘underground/enclosed’ feeling that basements can have. Lighting, both natural and particularly artificial was a key part of the design - used to give the sense of being above ground. A large ‘rooflight’ with concealed artificial daylight fittings within, gives the playroom a sense of daylight flooding from above. This is particularly enjoyed by the younger members of the family.
