The days when Soho was regarded as a sleazy area full of strip joints, dodgy clubs and smoky pubs are long gone. Since re-gentrification in the 1980s, this single square mile south of Oxford Street has been reinvented to become the place to head for smart restaurants, bars, theatres, clubs and coffee shops that stay open until the early hours.

It is also a sought-after place to live for those working in the media or film industries (both have offices here) or anyone in love with the neighbourhood’s vibrancy and non-stop liveliness. Soho interior style is, inevitably, contemporary and urban (apart from the single row of Georgian terrace houses in Meard Street) with a loft-living/warehouse vibe.

Soho wasn’t always an entertainment district: its first inhabitants were aristocrats who lived in the smart homes around Soho Square. When they moved out to more fashionable areas like Mayfair, prostitutes, music halls and theatres moved in. Musicians, cabaret artists, writers and anyone with a bohemian bent, were drawn by the area’s louche reputation, with many music venues, theatres, and pubs! boasting legendary performances. More recently, a media crowd has populated private members’ clubs like the Groucho and Soho House.

The imminent arrival of Crossrail has led to a boom in new development with new loft apartments being built simultaneously with offices, shops and theatres. These now sit alongside converted flats above shops and warehouse conversions as part of Soho’s property portfolio, and are sought-after by young professionals keen to have a home within walking distance of the area’s busy nightlife.
