Tucked away down a picturesque street in Notting Hill, Akub is a Palestinian restaurant celebrating the rich diversity of ingredients and culinary traditions from the region, while working with locally sourced British ingredients. The brief for the project involved the challenging transformation of a dated townhouse into a chic home of Palestinian hospitality and style, comprising of two restaurant floors, a light filled courtyard and subterranean bar. Limewashed walls, oak-clad joinery and contrasting Oro marble elevate the rustic nature of the space. The downstairs bar has a handpainted mural of the Palestinian landscape over the walls, which we curved to envelop the customer and create a cosiness. In the terrace, an olive tree and climbing jasmine cover the beams, added to provide architectural interest and privacy for diners whilst still allowing the natural light to fill the restaurant.
