Commissioned by a busy family to ensure their new build property hit the mark in terms of style and personality. Starting prior to construction enabled careful planning of kitchen location, plus socket and lighting positions. Interior architecture consultation provided invaluable advice on the interior detailing such as doors, handles etc, ensuring the luxury look was carried through in the details. The large open-plan space was of paramount importance as the family would spend most of their time here. The space was broken up with a diving wall, ensuring the kitchen and living area were defined. Bold black colour blocking in various polished plaster finishes provided depth and contrast. The clients love for colour was accentuated with fun accents of chartreuse.
Our clients on this project were a young family building a new 5 bedroom, contemporary house in Ealing, West London. They had got to the stage of needing to decide internal layouts and had come up against a conundrum in their large, open-plan kitchen-dining-living space. They approached us to recommend an interior designer who could help with the space planning in this room.
We recommended Susan Venn, an interior designer with expertise in both spatial planning and kitchen design. Susan's designs had won her a RIBA award for space planning and she had worked for a specialist kitchen company before setting up her design studio. We knew the importance of designing the kitchen, dining and living space holistically and that at the kitchen company, Susan's designs were much in demand as she designed the room as a whole rather than just the kitchen in isolation - something that is a must with open-plan living. Susan also had a great working relationship with an excellent local cabinet maker who could design kitchens.
After the initial space planning exercise was completed to our client's satisfaction, they asked Susan to help with other aspects of the interior design. The relationship blossomed and in time led to Susan helping them with the interior design for the entire house. As the client eloquently put it:
"Susan is exceptionally accommodating with requests and is generous and intuitive always creating a feeling of complete ease and trust. Her attention to detail and the design finish on all her work is outstanding and exceeded all expectations. She is always at the end of a phone or email and an absolute pleasure to work with. We could not recommend her highly enough."
The early stage spatial planning ensured that the location of the kitchen, dining and living zone had cohesion while still remaining defined cosy areas. Careful planning, use of materials and partition walls, including one with an integrated fireplace, ensured the open plan space avoided the usual pitfalls of appearing cavernous and cold. The materials used focused on practicality while still remaining luxurious. A bold colour scheme of zingy lime set against a backdrop of darker tones and a mix of sumptuous textures with clean-lined joinery and furniture helped to create this comfortable, contemporary home with a definite wow factor.
