Chelsea

Chelsea has always attracted affluent and interesting residents including artists, royalty, film stars and musicians, drawn by its location overlooking the River Thames, handsome residential property, garden squares and lively street life. Notable former residents include Mick Jagger, Sir Laurence Oliver and Vivien Leigh, Mary Quant and Oscar Wilde and many others. During the 19th century, the area around Cheyne Walk became a bohemian enclave populated by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, including William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Their former homes can be identified by studio spaces with large windows to maximise light (blue plaques indicate where they lived), and artists such as Peter Blake still gather at the legendary Chelsea Arts Club.

The 1960s and early 1970s saw a different sort of bohemian parade up and down the King’s Road – shopping for kaftans and Afghan coats at boutiques like Granny Takes a Trip and cowboy boots at R Soles. Members of both the Beatles and Rolling Stones lived here, adding to its allure and give the area a decadent reputation. The late 1970s, following Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren opening their clothes shop Sex, punks took over and many a mohican getting off the tube at Sloane Square and heading for World’s End.  These days, the majority of residents are more likely to be investment bankers, and people from the art and film worlds. Chelsea’s grand architecture including the neo-classical Old Town Hall and the Christopher Wren designed Chelsea Barracks (where the Chelsea Flower Show is held) never fails to impress, and sit alongside Georgian mansion blocks and Victorian cottages. Property in Chelsea is sought-after – it is considered one of the most desirable addresses in London – and it is easy to see why. It’s a long and fascinating history continues to attract restaurateurs, smart clothes, furniture and interiors shops.
